Abstract Inspiration (artist statement)

This exhibition is a collection of abstract paintings derived from different types of inspirations. In most cases the inspirations are still evident as subjects, however the viewer is challenged to “see what they see” as an act of discovery. As Ford and I discussed what we liked about each other’s previous series of painted works we discovered a common love for strong color, mixed-media processes and a sense of chaos combined with control. The exhibition is a collection of works that combine the techniques of glued collage, modeled textures, charcoal drawing, drawn ink, spray paint, paint marker, embedded photography, and layers of gloss. Ford has done an excellent job of demonstrating a lose application of paint combined with white sharply controlled subjects. His work’s size and range is a feast for anyone who loves color.

For myself, I find that often the reality that we are confronted with is formed by what lies beneath the surface. As children we learn to connect the dots and see lines and shapes that allow us to categorize and understand the world. In reality the lines we see are human inventions. They are a way of understanding and not actual reality. Many of the works I entered contain a style of drawing called contour. This drawing method traces the outsides lines of an object. What makes the work more interesting to me is the multiple angles and overlap of these contours. This process obscures the object by challenging our methods of categorization. Other works I am exhibiting are named in Latin (English’s root language) after common Texas animals but are constructed of the subject’s underlining bone structures. A face only looks the way we are accustomed to because of this structure. All of these series used actual bones as inspirations even the human skulls. Other works attempt to create visual feeling such as the magic of turning paper into origami, expressing the feeling of cotton candy, the green growth of spring or the colorful feeling of a child’s room full of toys.

The exhibit is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11am to 5pm until February 24th. During ArtWalk days, second Thursdays of each month, the exhibit is open till 8pm. ArtWalks for this exhibit are January 13th and February 11th.

Wonderful site that has detailed tutorials on video special effects production. Our school just upgraded and gained After Effects in the process, so I am working on many of these effects. Very cool stuff, and allot of it FREE!

PC to Mac

Found this great site that goes over how to pimp your PC to run features from the Mac OS. It runs pretty smoothly, but i wish i could get rid of several other PC problems, like the 4 virus protection programs running at once that bog down everything. Crazy thing is they even have links to install and run Mac's OS on your PC instead - to bad it's not legal,yet. Michael Dell announced that if Apple would make it legal he would ship Dell's with the Mac OS this year!

My wife says I don't do enough artwork about my youngest son. I'm not sure how much this helps that problem, but it was a lovely moment.

Equal Sized Canisters

I was working on some production pots this week. A group of canisters with lids. It's tricky to get them all the same size and weight, but I think the set works.

Quick Painting Trick

How do professional illustrators create paintings so fast? Well, grids, projection, light tables: there all great but sometimes the easiest fix is to just print out your photograph and paint on top of it. I used this technique to teach students how to convert colors of an image to just primary and secondary colors. (makes images much brighter and teaches color mixing) This was my example.

Pantograph

I had a student who wanted to try a pantograph. I hadn't even seen one since junior high school, but in the end it was easy enough to make with some scrap wood, dowel rods and a drill. This is what it's good for. I drew this in 14 minutes and it rescaled the image about 125%

Paper Model Hobby

These are some paper models I have built for fun. I have always loved modeling and I found through Google search a set of free paper models that are printed from the computer, backed with thicker paper, and then glued via the instructions. Pretty cool stuff! I have worked out some other ways of scaling up the models using different materials.

I plan to get a series of architectural models built for class examples.

Black & White Exhibition

This is my entry for the black and white exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Arts. The sky was a little blown out so I had to darken it in Photoshop. Printed it at Sam's Club for $6 (16x20 done in 15 minutes, sweet!)

New artwork example

Finished an example artwork based on teaching color mixing with a more
interesting outcome than a basic color wheel. The result does involve
mixing all the primaries and secondaries as well as many neutrals.
Plus it looks cool!

Test

This is a test series with half inch thick insulation foam as my painting support. I started with the foam and a master work of art recreated with acrylic. The foam is so light weight that it allows for adding depth to the painting as you can see in the side view. I also did a Gauguin portrait earlier as a test.
